Capturing Moments at the NAACP Jamaica Branch 68th Freedom Fund Dinner Dance

When I stepped into Antun’s in Queens, New York, the energy was palpable. The iconic venue, known for hosting countless memorable events, was brimming with excitement as the NAACP Jamaica Branch held their annual fundraiser dinner dance. My role? To immortalize this vibrant evening through my lens. As someone who specializes in event photography across New Jersey, moments like these are where I thrive—capturing not just images but stories, emotions, and history in the making.

A Night to Celebrate Community Excellence

The evening was more than a fundraiser; it was a tribute to the community’s unsung heroes. Guests arrived dressed to the nines, with a mix of elegance and joy that filled the room. The event also honored outstanding members of the community for their tireless work, making it a night of well-deserved recognition. Among the esteemed guests was the keynote speaker, Karen Boykin-Towns, the Vice Chair of the NAACP, who delivered a powerful and inspiring address. Her words resonated deeply, reminding everyone why gatherings like these are so essential.

In my work as a New Jersey people photographer, events like this are particularly meaningful. They’re not just about snapping posed photos; they’re about documenting connections, pride, and the shared mission of uplifting one another. Each award presented, every handshake exchanged, and every laugh shared told a story of resilience and unity.

The Venue: Antun’s in Queens

Antun’s set the perfect backdrop for such an occasion. With its timeless decor and warm ambiance, the venue amplified the evening’s celebratory mood. I made it a point to capture wide-angle shots of the beautifully decorated ballroom, ensuring the grandeur of the space was preserved in every frame. The golden light bouncing off the chandeliers added a magical glow to the images, enhancing the emotions of the night.

As a New Jersey professional photographer, I’ve worked in venues across the region, but there’s something special about a place like Antun’s that holds so much history. It’s in these settings that the interplay of light, color, and movement becomes a playground for creativity.

Behind the Lens: Tools of the Trade

For this event, I relied on my trusted Sony gear. The Sony a7IV paired with a Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lens was my go-to for capturing wide shots of the ballroom and group photos, while the Sony a7II with the Tamron 70-180mm f2.8 lens was perfect for candid portraits and close-ups of award presentations. These tools allowed me to adapt to the dynamic environment, ensuring every significant moment was documented with precision.

The challenge of event photography is always being ready for the unexpected. A fleeting smile, a tear of joy, or the animated gestures of someone telling a story—these are the moments that make an event come alive. My approach is to anticipate rather than react, to blend into the background while being present enough to capture the magic as it unfolds.

Capturing the Heart of the Event

One of my favorite images from the night was a candid shot of Karen Boykin-Towns laughing with attendees. The pure joy on her face, coupled with the admiration evident in the expressions of those around her, encapsulated the spirit of the evening. Another standout moment was the group photo of community honorees—a mosaic of individuals from different walks of life, united by their commitment to making a difference.

It’s these images that remind me why I do what I do. As a New Jersey event photographer, my mission is to ensure that every client not only remembers their event but feels the emotions of the day every time they look at their photos.

Building Connections Through Photography

Events like the NAACP fundraiser are also an opportunity to build connections. Photography is more than a job for me; it’s a way to engage with people, to understand their stories, and to become a part of the moments they hold dear. At this event, I had the chance to meet inspiring individuals who are making real change in their communities. It’s humbling and motivating to be surrounded by such passion and dedication.

Why Hire a Professional Event Photographer?

You might wonder: why hire a professional photographer for an event? Can’t someone with a decent camera or smartphone do the job? Here’s the thing—capturing an event is more than just pointing and shooting. It’s about understanding the flow of the evening, knowing when to step in and when to step back, and having the technical expertise to work with challenging lighting or fast-moving subjects.

As a New Jersey professional photographer, I bring years of experience and a commitment to excellence to every assignment. I’m not just taking pictures; I’m telling a story, preserving a legacy, and creating a visual narrative that you can cherish for years to come.

Reflecting on the Evening

As the evening came to a close and guests began to trickle out, I took a moment to reflect. The NAACP Jamaica Branch fundraiser dinner dance was more than an event—it was a celebration of progress, a call to action, and a testament to the power of community. It was an honor to be a part of it, to witness the joy and camaraderie, and to capture it all through my lens.

Photography has the unique ability to freeze time, to hold onto moments that might otherwise fade. Whether it’s the sparkle of a gown under the lights, the warmth of a handshake, or the laughter shared between friends, these are the details that make life beautiful. And as a New Jersey people photographer, it’s my privilege to ensure those details are never lost.
